Questions and Answers about Neurofeedback

Insights to Health Clinic offers Neurofeedback! You may have heard about this new treatment, which is exploding in popularity due to the current favorable research regarding its efficacy. Below, we answer some frequently asked questions.

What is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback "trains" the brain so that it may work more efficiently. Using leads attached to the scalp, the system measures your brain waves and then gives slight electromagnetic feedback to selected areas of the brain. This has the effect of regenerating neurons and improving neurological functioning.  The LENS system, used at Insights to Health, creates less side effects and better results than other types of neurofeedback.

What is the procedure?

The patient sits in a chair; the doctor attaches electrodes to the scalp and measures brain wave activity in various areas. We then create a map of the brain that tells us how to continue treatment. Most patients report changes within a couple of sessions in sleep, mood, memory, and energy.

What is neurofeedback good for?

Any health problem involving the central nervous system can be helped with neurofeedback. It is indicated for a variety of conditions and has been shown to be effective in treating anxiety, depression, insomnia, attention deficits, memory problems, behavior disorders, sleep apnea, migraines and headaches, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson's, emotional disturbances and PMS. Many of these conditions may be rooted in a head injury which can occur in a simple whiplash incident such as contact sports or vehicular accident.

How will I know if this will help me?

Dr. Winkelman will have a good sense, based on your history and exam, during your first visit if neurofeedback may be helpful.  The map of your brainwaves is created and shared with you during the first 3-5 sessions, and this information further confirms whether or not this modality will be effective.  If you have any of the above problems, or other health problems that have not been addressed with other treatments, please schedule an appointment for an assessment.

Does this replace my other natural treatments?

No, but it can make other healing modalities more effective. If a health problem is brain related and the neurological system is not treated directly, true resolution of those problems cannot occur. Often, other NDs or MDs refer patients to Insights to Health for neurofeedback services, and care is coordinated between the physicians. In fact, we see improved results when people are using both natural medicines and neurofeedback-- effects appear to be synergistic.

Are there side effects?

Generally no. Some patients report being tired for a short duration after a session but, after resting,  often respond with improvement in cognitive function.

How many sessions are required?

For full resolution, 15-20 sessions is the average.  Sessions are scheduled weekly.

Does my insurance cover neurofeedback?

We can verify coverage. Insurances vary in coverage of neurofeedback and the conditions for which it is covered.
