Autism and Allergies

Autism and Allergies

April is Autism Awareness Month and the CDC recently stated that 1 in 50 children in the US are now diagnosed with Autism! April is also the time of year that people’s allergies can flare up. But did you know there is a connection between allergies and autism?

Allergies can become more prominent in patients with autism. Holistic doctors can use allergies as a guide to treatment as it may reveal much about the person. The cause of allergies vary from person to person. In the general population, seasonal allergies, which includes runny nose, sneezing and so forth arise as the body’s mechanism to eliminate toxins that it is having trouble removing. It is a sign of overload in the body. In this situation the liver and/or the kidneys aren’t working fast enough to eliminate and so the lungs are engaged to help with this process. We have many different remedies to help in this situation to treat the liver and kidneys to be more efficient eliminators.

In autism though some alleriges arise because of a situation called undermethylation. The body uses methyl groups to communicate. In many cases of autism, (and ADHD, depression and anxiety), histamine levels rise because the body doesn’t have enough methyl groups. Methyl groups use up histamine in the body. General allergy treatments don’t work because the cause of the allergies has nothing to do with the pollen counts at all. The body itself is creating too much histamine.

Fortunately there is a simple blood test to discover this problem and even easier treatments. The blood test looks at whole blood histamine. This isn’t the best test for allergies as there are other factors involved with that. For determining methylation levels in the body it is an excellent test. Dr. William Walsh has used this technique on thousands of patients with autism, ADD/ADHD, depression, schizophrenia, Alzheimer’s, and other so called mental illnesses to determine if there is a biochemical imbalance in the body. Using the simple blood test, Dr. Walsh found that appropriate supplementation over a 3-6 month period would help correct the imbalance. These treatments were safe, natural and effective. Not only would the allergies disappear but the associated symptoms of the presenting problem would as well. The main issue is that until you understand the underlying cause of the problem, it is difficult to treat. Symptoms are only signposts to imbalances in the body.

Allergies and autism may be connected but not always. A full workup by a holistic doctor can help uncover the problem and bring relief to you or your loved one. Understanding the problem is the first step to determining the best treatment options. Call us to find out more about how we can help with either issue.
